今天的材料为一段汉译英，节选自名为《坚持科学溯源 反对政治操弄》的讲话，英文标题为：Uphold Science-Based Origin-Tracing and Oppose Political Manipulation。

病毒溯源必须反对政治操弄。病毒溯源是严肃的科学问题，绝不能将政治凌驾于科学之上，不能将政治私利置于人民生命健康之上。我们看到，从去年公然把病毒称为“武汉病毒”，到悍然退出世卫组织，美国从一开始就试图把疫情政治化、病毒污名化、溯源工具化，甚至无视科学家的辛勤工作，改用情报手段进行所谓溯源，炒作有罪推定的“实验室泄漏论”。美方用心昭然若揭，就是转移自身抗疫不力的责任，达到抹黑打压别国的政治目的。
Political manipulation must be opposed in origin-tracing. Origin-tracing is a serious scientific issue. Politics shall never be allowed to be placed before science.Political interests cannot be above people’s lives and health. The US openly called COVID-19 the “***********” last year and withdrew from WHO. From the very beginning, the US has tried to politicize the pandemic, stigmatize the virus, and use origin-tracing as a tool and it is still doing so. It even turns a blind eye to the hard work of scientists by resorting to the intelligence community to conduct origin-tracing and hype up the so-called lab-leak theory with the presumption of guilt.US motives are obvious to all: to evade the responsibility of its incompetence to fight the virus and achieve the political goal of discrediting and suppressing other countries.

病毒溯源必须反对政治操弄。
Political manipulation must be opposed in origin-tracing.
这一句的翻译极易犯错——很多同学习惯看到原文后贸然下笔翻译，而罔顾原文语序，词与词之间的关系，结果，就会把「病毒溯源」当作主语，「反对」作谓语，「政治操弄」作宾语。处理为Political manipulation must oppose origin-tracing.乍一看没错误，实则是对原文的背离。「病毒溯源」是一个过程，在原文中作状语，故处理为in origin-tracing,这样一来，这句话的主语要么增译主语we，表示以我国为代表的所有国家，要么使用「政治操弄」为主语，处理为被动句，得到两种译文：
We作主语，主动语态：We must oppose political manipulation in origin-tracing.
Political manipulation作主语，被动语态：Political manipulation must be opposed in origin-tracing.
「反对」一词出现频率很高，可处理为及物动词oppose，形容词词组be opposed to或者介词短语be against，有时想要表达强烈反对可增译副词strongly，得到be strongly against。
「政治操弄」：political manipulation。

病毒溯源是严肃的科学问题，绝不能将政治凌驾于科学之上，不能将政治私利置于人民生命健康之上。
Origin-tracing is a serious scientific issue. Politics shall never be allowed to be placed before science.Politics shall never be allowed to be placed before science.
「严肃的科学问题」a serious scientific issue，在政经类文本中，issue常用来表示“问题”，多指意见能达到一致的、要通过争论或讨论解决的问题，例如：政治问题：a political issue,安全问题：the issue of security，朝鲜半岛核问题：the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue。
「绝不能将政治凌驾于科学之上，不能将政治私利置于人民生命健康之上」：「A凌驾于B之上」中的“凌驾”可用place A above/before表示，place表示“放置”，也可用同样表示“放置”的put，再看介词的搭配：before表示“在...之前”不难理解，above表示“优先于”，故合起来表示「凌驾于...之上」，再看一例：
任何国家都不应该将经济利益凌驾于生态环境之上，都不应该将本国私利凌驾于人类健康之上。
. No country should place its economic interests above the ecological environment. And no country should put its selfish interest above the health of humanity.
此外，override一词也可表达相似概念，其英文释义为be more important than，即“比...更重要”，为及物动词，因此此句也不妨表达为：
Politics shall never override science.

我们看到，从去年公然把病毒称为“武汉病毒”，到悍然退出世卫组织，美国从一开始就试图把疫情政治化、病毒污名化、溯源工具化，
「从去年公然把病毒称为“武汉病毒”，到悍然退出世卫组织」：这句话为美国将疫情政治化的一些反映，除了用from...to...表示「从...到...」，也可单独成句。译文选择后种处理，
「公然」：openly called COVID-19 the “***********”，「公然」除了用openly，也可使用blatantly和overtly，blatantly表示“明目张胆地，赤裸裸地”，overtly除了表示“公然地”，也可表示“公开地”。
「把病毒称为“武汉病毒”」：called COVID-19 the “***********”，「把...称为」也可用dub。
「悍然退出世卫组织」：此处省译「悍然」一词，原因为上一句的“公然”与“悍然”意思相近，都强调一种明目张胆。要论这两个词的区别，「悍然」更侧重于“蛮横无理”，若要译出，可处理为flagrantly一词，其英文释义为do something in a conspicuous way or obviously offensive way。
「退出」用的是withdraw from，退出某个机构或组织、退出某项活动，都可使用该短语。例如：
The African National Congress threatened to withdraw from the talks.
非洲国民大会威胁要退出会谈。
A back injury forced her to withdraw from Wimbledon.
背部受伤使她不得不退出温布尔登赛事。
calls for Britain to withdraw from the European Union
要求英国退出欧盟的呼声
「世卫组织」：缩略语为WHO，全称为World Health Organization.
「美国从一开始就试图把疫情政治化、病毒污名化、溯源工具化」：「一开始」用的是from the very beginning,此处的时态要特别注意，强调从一开始美国的做法对现在及将来产生的影响，用现在完成时。
接下来的两个“化”都以-ize结尾：「把疫情政治化」：politicize the pandemic；「病毒污名化」：stigmatize the virus，「溯源工具化」则不能以相同方式处理，这是因为“工具”一词不能做动词，只能处理为“把...当作工具”：use origin-tracing as a tool

甚至无视科学家的辛勤工作，改用情报手段进行所谓溯源，炒作有罪推定的“实验室泄漏论”。
It even turns a blind eye to the hard work of scientists by resorting to the intelligence community to conduct origin-tracing and hype up the so-called lab-leak theory with the presumption of guilt.
「甚至无视科学家的辛勤工作，改用情报手段进行所谓溯源，炒作有罪推定的“实验室泄漏论”。」:「无视」一词可用三个地道短语来表示，一个是“装聋”：turn a deaf ear to，一个是“装瞎”：turn a blind eye to，还有一个是“背向某人”：turn one's back on，三者都可表示“不闻不问，置之不理”。由于「无视」和「改用」存在一定相关性，故通过介词by连接，我们知道by可表示“通过”，引导方式。
「用情报手段进行所谓溯源，炒作有罪推定的“实验室泄漏论”」：由于这句话在介词by之后，故要用v-ing形式。「用情报手段」为方式，此处处理为“求助于情报界”，resort to the intelligence community,resort to表示“诉诸某种手段，我们常说的“诉诸武力”就是resort to violence.
「进行所谓溯源和炒作有罪推定的“实验室泄漏论”」为目的，前者处理为不定式to conduct origin-tracing，后者翻译关键点有三：「炒作」用hype up，即“大肆宣传”表示，
“有罪推定的”本是阴谋论的定语，一两个词无法说清，此处处理为状语with the presumption of guilt（凭借有罪的假设或推定），
此处的“实验室泄漏论”由于是一种阴谋论，为了表示不赞同和否定的语气，此处增译了so-called，即“所谓的”，得到the so-called lab-leak theory。

美方用心昭然若揭，就是转移自身抗疫不力的责任，达到抹黑打压别国的政治目的。
US motives are obvious to all: to evade the responsibility of its incompetence to fight the virus and achieve the political goal of discrediting and suppressing other countries.
「美方用心昭然若揭」：「用心」在此处指“用意，意图”，用motives表示，政经类文本中还常出现“别有用心”这个词，拓展一下，可用ill-intentioned表示，「昭然若揭」即非常明显，译文用的是obvious，此外，用clear，evident也可以。
「就是转移自身抗疫不力的责任，达到抹黑打压别国的政治目的。」：这句为目的，处理为不定式，“转移或规避责任”除了用evade之外，也可用shirk:
A Foreign Ministry spokesman said the U.S. attempted to shirk responsibility for failing to control the virus.
中国外交部发言人称，美国试图推卸防控疫情不力的责任。
「自身抗疫不力的责任」同样为“定语＋中心词”，“做某事的责任”英文译作the responsibility to do或of sth/doing sth.此处选后种，即“抗疫方面展现的无能”（its incompetence to fight the virus ）
「达到抹黑打压别国的政治目的」：“达到目的”用achieve the goal,“抹黑打压别国”可视作该目的的同位语，故用of连接，处理为of discrediting and suppressing other countries. 「抹黑」一词除了用discredit，还可以用smear、slander、defame这几个表示“诽谤，诋毁”的词，还可使用tarnish（玷污，损害（名誉））一词表示，来看几个例句：
The ministry also accused Germany of discrediting Russia in the international arena.
俄外交部还指责德国在国际舞台上抹黑俄罗斯。
Biden accused Trump of making an unfounded political smear.
拜登指责特朗普对他进行毫无根据的政治抹黑。
