Unraveling the neurobiological mechanisms underlying the bidirectional sleep-pain link
截止时间:6月30日
1
Project
Chronic low back pain (CLBP) with and without insomnia is a highly prevalent and debilitating disorder characterized by huge socioeconomic burden. Sleep disturbances contribute significantly to CLBP severity and have a bidirectional relationship with chronic pain. This project will fill a critical knowledge gap by unraveling the underlying neurobiological brain mechanisms of this sleep-pain link in CLBP patients compared to pain-free controls with and without insomnia. We hypothesize that altered glial and neural brain mechanisms are linked to increased pain severity and sensitivity in response to acute and chronic sleep disruption. The effect of experimentally-induced acute insomnia will be studied with a randomized controlled crossover study in CLBP patients and pain- free controls. The impact of chronic sleep disturbances will be assessed via a cross-sectional case-control study in CLBP patients and pain-free controls with and without chronic insomnia. We will address our hypothesis by uniquely and ambitiously combining cutting-edge methods in neuroscience (PET-MRI to assess glial activation and neural responses to painful stimuli), pain (quantitative sensory testing to measure pain sensitivity and endogenous pain modulation), and sleep medicine research (ecologically valid sleep disturbance protocol and sleep assessments). Such research is urgently needed to develop effective and novel treatments for CLBP and insomnia that target the involved neurobiological mechanisms.
The main objective of this innovative research project is to gain fundamental insight into the neurobiological mechanisms underlying the sleep-pain relationship in CLBP patients. We will examine the effect of experimentally-induced acute insomnia and chronic insomnia on pain and pain sensitivity, and assess hypothesized underlying (glial and neuronal) brain mechanisms in 2 work packages using cutting-edge pain, neuroscience and sleep medicine methods. As such, this project will elevate sleep-pain interaction research in chronic pain beyond the state-of-the-art.

Profile
We are looking for an enthusiastic and highly motivated candidate with Master degree in a relevant discipline (medicine, psychology, neurosciences, biomedical sciences, rehabilitation sciences, or equivalent). Final-year students who will have obtained their Master degree by July 2023 are also encouraged to apply. Assistants in psychiatry can also apply.
Candidates have a genuine interest in the interaction between bodily, psychological and neural processes, pain and sleep.
Besides excellent organizational and experimental research skills, the candidate should possess excellent interpersonal skills and communication skills, both in English and in Dutch. Strong academic writing skills are a prerequisite.
You are very motivated to work with patients in a research setting and are very interested in data-analysis.
As the PhD student will work with patients, candidates must master the Dutch language. If Dutch is not your native language, an ERK level C1 is expected.
Experience with sleep and pain measurement and brain imaging are an asset but not a prerequisite

Offer
Joint PhD in Rehabilitation Sciences and Physiotherapy (VUB) and Biomedical Sciences (KU Leuven) with VUB as main institution.
You will be part of the research groups PAIN (VUB) and LaBGAS (KU Leuven).
Full-time employment (38 hours per week).
Estimated net salary per month: ca. EUR 2000,- (depending on qualification, age, and family situation).
Duration of contract: 4 years (based on a successful intermediate evaluation at VUB and KU Leuven after 1 year).

PhD Research Scholar positions - Department of Business and Management Science
截止日期:2023年9月15日
入学时间:2024年8月
1
Project
The PhD programme at NHH is a four-year fully-funded programme, which combines an intensive course component with research and relevant work experience, preparing the school’s graduates for scholarly positions at recognised international institutions and positions in knowledge-intensive institutions and firms outside of academia. Former PhD graduates have been hired by renowned institutions such as HEC Paris, NOVA SBE, Tilburg University, Hanken School of Economics, Norwegian universities and business schools, as well as in the government, banking, finance and consulting industries.
The PhD research scholars will be included in a highly stimulating and rewarding research environment, working closely with faculty members and other PhD research scholars at the school. The PhD research scholars get feedback on their work through regular interaction with their supervisor and other faculty members. PhD research scholars are expected to participate actively in faculty and research seminars, as well as in workshops. The place of work will be at NHH in Bergen where the PhD research scholars will receive their own office space in their department.
The scholarship includes 25% teaching and/or research assistance responsibilities, and the PhD research scholars must take one basic module of the programme for university pedagogy in the course of the fixed-term period. The PhD programme gives preference to applicants who address research problems that fit the research interests of the department and available resources for supervision. As the school aspires gender balance and diversity, female applicants will be given preference if applicants are otherwise equally qualified.
The annual salary for the PhD research scholar position is set according to the Norwegian State Salary, which currently is NOK 531 800 (equivalent to approximately EUR 46 250 or USD 50 600). The salary ensures a fair standard of living in Norway and is subject to Norwegian taxes and benefits, including public health care benefits and pension savings.
The city of Bergen offers a mild coastal climate and hosts rich opportunities for culture and outdoor activities, as well as a family-friendly environment. To explore the city, go to visitnorway.com .
