In a major boost for the indigenous defence industry, India is going to make six new Airborne Early Warning and Control planes to be developed by Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) on aircraft from Air India to further improve Air Force's surveillance capabilities along borders with China and Pakistan.

The Defence Research and Development Organisation had earlier planned to build six Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) on the Airbus 330 aircraft for which some facilities were planned to be created in Bengaluru.

As per plans, the six new aircraft would be sent to a European destination to the original equipment manufacturer for modification of the planes for installing the radar, the sources said.

IMHO converting commercially available jets into AEW&C is a great option. These planes are so readily available that they are almost sanction proof and well tested as well.
As I have heard on this forum the Y-8F600 platform (ZDK-03) is a maintenance extensive plane. Pakistan should also look into this option. Get a good Chinese/Turkish radar and install it on Boeing or Airbus and that can work great for Pakistan.

While a lot of people ridicule DRDO, it really depends on which particular department or sub-org of DRDO is handling the project. For instance, DRDO's missiles and helo departments are among the best. ADA has also significantly improved with the whole LCA project. AWACS is handled by DRDO's CABS, LRDE and DEAL departments and the timeline for development and deployment of our first three Netra AWACS was pretty fast. I'd expect them to do much better in this case

That's a load of BS...our initial three Netra AWACS which were developed around 2010 are based on Embraer ERJ-145 which are generally used as commercial regional planes. Instead of procuring newer ones, we're using Air India's fleet now

Actually Embraer delivered the modified airfrxs with slots for AWACS gear. The customer has to design the system to fit in the slots
