作者简介

乔治·吉辛（George Gissing，1857-1903）是英国小说家，散文家。他生于约克郡的威克维尔特，在伍斯特郡的公谊会教派寄宿学校及曼彻斯特的欧文斯学院以优异成绩毕业。1876年因偷钱救助一个妓女犯了罪，被判处短期徒刑。后来，因朋友的的帮助，被遣送往美国，教语言课数月，在芝加哥过着穷困潦倒的生活，几乎濒于绝境。当时他曾写过一些短篇小说投稿于《论坛报》。
