PLA Navy Shandong is China’s first aircraft carrier with fully-independent Chinese R&D, design, construction and equipment, with a full length at 305 meters, width at 75 meters and full-load displacement around 70,000 tonnes. The total deck size of Shandong is three times the size of a standard football pitch, making it possible to carry at least 35 PLA J-15 shipboard fighters. The engineers of Shandong learned the success experience in the construction of Shandong from Liaoning, with their restless R&D efforts day and night, Shandong finally evolved into a state-of-the-art aircraft carrier. On December 17, 2019, ratified by the Central Military Commission of the CPC, the first fully-Chinese-made aircraft carrier was officially named “PLA Navy Shandong” with hull number 17. The enlistment of Shandong to the Chinese PLA Navy marks a new epoch with fully-Chinese-made aircraft carriers and lays a solid foundation for China’s subsequent construction of nuclear-powered aircraft carriers. The commissioning of Shandong has reinforced the strength of Chinese PLA Navy and is of great significance in driving forth the national safety and maritime defense strength of our country.
