The East River watershed in Colorado. Understanding the bedrock properties of the watershed and related feedback of environmental disturbances to groundwater can help improve downstream water management. Conventional approaches are highly localized and make it difficult to estimate on a regional scale. Uhlemann et al., applied machine learning to analyze geophysical and remote sensing data as well as near-surface geophysics of the area and created a detailed model of the East River watershed’s belowground properties. This method can help predict how regions like watersheds and coastal systems will respond to disruptions caused by climate change.

A stretchable, wearable electronic device sits on a human finger. Wearable devices can be used for health monitoring, disease treatment, soft robots, and virtual and augmented reality. Previous device stretchability was limited by rigid, brittle inorganic electronic components. However, Song et al., used stacked multilayer network materials to achieve both elastic stretchability and function density in their inorganic electronic device. With high air permeability and biomimetic mechanical responses that match those of human skin, they developed a multifunctional device system that is comfortable and serves as a compass display, somatosensory mouse, and physiological signal monitor.

Off the Farne Islands near Northumberland, England live European lobster, soft corals, Dead man's fingers and sea urchins. These creatures are calcifiers, organisms that produce minerals from living cells, a process called biomineralization. In their review, Gilbert et al., develop a model for calcium carbonate biomineralization applicable to all phyla. Their model may help elucidate the key genetic components that drive biomineralization and offers insight into the consequences of global climate change on marine organisms.

Artistic rendering of light concentration by a bundle of cone photoreceptor mitochondria in the eye. According to Ball et al., in addition to delivering energy, these tightly packed mitochondria focus light for vision. Acting as microlenses, the mitochondria also provide directional sensitivity to light. The findings show that structural and functional changes in cone mitochondria may offer an additional tool to detect retinal disease.
