fall between two stools 与 掉队了

stool有板凳的意思（没有靠背的那种），本来有两个板凳可以坐，结果你却坐到两个板凳中间的地上去了，什么意思呢？意思就是比喻本来是有两个可以达到的目标，然而你是选择困难也好或者有了鱼与熊掌兼得之心，反正结果是两个选择都没有选上，于是就失败了。

在美国习语词典中的解释是To fail to achieve one's desired goal due to hesitation between two available alternatives. 比如说本来有两套房可供选择，因为纠结买哪套好等了几天，再想买发现房价上去了买不起了，用这个来讲就蛮合适。

这个词其实是来源于英国的古老谚语 Between two stools one falls to the ground. 在英国习语中也可以说caught between two stools

英国习语词典中的英文的解释是(1) Someone/sth is in an unsatisfactory situation because they does not belong to either of two acceptable or successful groups, or

(2) because they are trying to do two different things at once and fail to do them both.

(1)就是讲人的行为或做出来的东西不伦不类，什么都不是，本来有两个可能成功的机会或选择结果都没能符合于是就失败了。比如各种文艺作品、产品设计、职业规划等都可以用这个来形容

(2)强调造成这种结果的原因是想要一举两得结果两头不讨好。像脚踩两只船，同时准备两场考试，边开车边看手机，一心二用什么的，这些都可以来形容

所以这个源于英国的习语，在英国使用时侧重的一是说结果；二是造成这种失败的原因是没有放弃精神，不懂舍得舍得。而在美国则侧重的是因为犹豫不决。

当我们说某人掉队了，大概就是当一群人一起向一个目标前进，而你却半途而废，还没走到终点就脱离大部队了。即有字面上指集体行进中落后的意思，也有比喻在其他的社会活动中落后的意思，像学习、职场、培训、道德品质等等。英文里有个词有类似的意思，就是fall by the wayside or drop by the wayside. 字面的意思上，就是说 to step out of a procession and stand nearby to recover (because of not feeling fit to continue) ，跟不上大部队的速度，太累了路边站会儿喘口气，by the wayside. 但这一歇不要紧，大部队可不等你，于是你就等于落后于别人了。所以比喻 To fail to stay at the same level of knowledge or proficiency with others , to fail to keep up with others. 在知识、技能等等方面都可以说与大部队拉开差距了。

Many of the students will drop by the wayside and never finish. Those who fall by the wayside will find it hard to catch up.

说工资、升职、生二胎、娶媳妇等等事情时，也可以用这个来讲。

As a single man, I just hate to meet my old friends these days. They all got married and have children so I feel like I already drop by the wayside.
