Vocab 6 Conjunctions

一、顺接

1. ergo (=therefore)

She was the sole beneficiary of the will, ergo the prime suspect.

*beneficiary n.= a person who gains a result of sth.

2. as a corollary 作为推论

*corollary n. = a situation, an argument or a fact that is the natural and direct result of another one

有时，corollary直接做表语从句的主语或者to/of+sth. 也适用

3. inasmuch as (Collins COBUILD Advanced Learner’s Dictionary : use ~ to introduce a statement which explains something you have just said, and adds to it) 由于

This was a good decision inasmuch as it worked for you.

二、逆接

1. notwithstanding

(1) prep.(also used following the noun it refers to 亦用于其所指名词之后) without being affected by sth. ; despite sth. 虽然；尽管

e.g Notwithstanding some major financial problems, the school has had a successful year.

虽然有些重大的经费问题，这所学校一年来还是很成功。

The bad weather notwithstanding, the event was a great success.

尽管天气恶劣，活动还是取得了巨大的成功。

2. albeit conj.= although 尽管(Collins COBUILD Advanced Learner’s Dictionary： introduce a fact or comment which reduces the force or significance of what you have just said)

e.g. Charles's letter was indeed published, albeit in a somewhat abbreviated form.

3. howbeit adv. =however

e.g. Howbeit, the whole problem cannot be solved.

4. yet/but nevertheless(即使完全做出让步，也不会影响结果发生)

e.g. Most parents don't give any systematic instruction of any kind to their children, yet the children nevertheless learn.

5. whereas=used to compare or contrast two facts （用以比较或对比两个事实）然而，但是，尽管

e.g Some of the studies show positive results, whereas others do not.

有一些研究结果令人满意，然而其他的则不然。

6. per contra

SVO, S, per contra, VO.

三、表示“关于”的词

1. regarding(可以和as per 一般相互替换适用)

2. apropos (of) 【不常用】

e.g. Meaning exists only insofar as it means to someone.

四、其他功能词

1. videlicet (viz.) / id est (i.e.)

2. per se(=in itself) 本质上

e.g. Immersion per se does not work.

3. lest(=in case) 

e.g. They will be obsessed with security, lest the Muggles notice anything.

4.simultaneously/synchronously

5. pending

词义上，这个单词和until类似；语法上，pending-until的关系可以类比于despite-though

例句：Sales of the drug have been stopped, pending further research.
