The 60-year-old actor has entered an exhilarating new phase of firsts, like her first time getting to play the superhero asquick-fisted, conflicted Evelynin indie smash Everything Everywhere All At Once, while in Netflix spin-off The Witcher: Blood Origin, she gets her firstpointy ears as the badass, sword-wielding elf Scian. Shecatches up with Empire about the whirlwind new Age of Yeoh.

Did you have a prior relationship with The Witcher before coming on board the prequel?

I’m a huge fan of sci-fi fantasy and the magical world of monsters. So I was a huge fan of the original Henry Cavill series.

What was the best part of stepping into that world?

The best part was playing an elf — it was the first time donning those ears. And I was very excited because in a lot of these magical series, you don’t see a lot of Asian faces. So I was very happy when [creator] Declan de Barra pitched the story to me, and I knew that Scian’s character was so strong, but also filled with history and tragedy. There was a lot of depth to the character.

It feels like you’ve done every stunt under the sun at this point. Is there something you got to do in this show that you’d never done before?

The only thing that I want to do next is sing. Which I’ve never done before, but that’s not to say that I can do it. For The Witcher: Blood Origin, we ventured into many different styles and techniques of fighting, which was a lot of fun and kind of brutal. But that was part of the viciousness of that time; it was do or die. There was no hesitation.

Everything Everywhere All At Once is a film still on a lot of people’s minds since its release. How are you feeling in the wake of such a milestone for you?

It feels fantastic. When I first read the script I almost wanted to cry, because I’ve waited so long for a script that gives an ageing woman a chance to be a superhero. It’s always the guys that get the fun part, and we’re like, “Hello, are we chopped liver? No!”

I had to make sure that [they] weren’t certifiably insane, because when you read that script you go, “Okay, there’s hot dogs and butt plugs, there’s a lot going on in here.” But when you talk to them, you see the passion, and the reason why they want to see this movie come to life. So we all held hands, we all jumped in together into the everything bagel. We had faith.

Oh my God, the Halloween costumes have been great. The Daniels are part of this generation that are always on the internet, so they keep sending me, the dinosaur, all these images of people with the googly eyes, or dressed as rocks, or with the hot-dog fingers, or as Raccacoonie. I think the biggest joy is having this generation of filmgoers embrace [points to herself] this actor.

He’s a genius, and he’s an amazing storyteller. He also puts his money where his mouth is; he loves the planet, he loves the oceans. He’s the only man that has gone down to the deepest part of the ocean. That’s an insane thing to do.

What is it about those films that feels important to you?
