对于密码学的贡献
1841年7月，爱伦坡在《格雷厄姆杂志》上发表了一篇题为《秘密写作的几句话》的文章。1843年他出版了侦探小说《金甲虫》，密码是该小说的重要组成部分。美国最重要的密码学家威廉姆·弗里德曼最初对密码学感兴趣是因为小时候读过《金甲虫》，后来他在第二次世界大战期间将其用于解密日本的紫色密码。
