1. exceed vt. 比……大；胜过

a. Their success exceeded all expectations. 他们的成功出乎一切预料。

b. exceed in size 规模突出

2. excel vi. /vt. 优于他人；胜过他人

a. He excels in courage/ as an ortor. 他在勇气（演说）方面胜过他人。

b. He excels all of us in/at tennis. 他的网球胜过我们所有的人。

3. overtake vt. 赶上；压倒；突然来袭

a. The driver overtook a line of vehicles. 司机超过了一长列车辆。

b. He overtook in the face of oncoming traffic.

他不顾迎面而来的车流强行超车。

c. Germany rapidly overtook Britain in industrial output.

在工业产量方面德国迅速超过了英国。

4. surpass vt. 超越；胜过，优于

a. The beauty of the scenery surpassed my expectations.

该处的风景之秀丽超出我的预料。

b. Pre-war levels of production were surpassed in 1929.

战前的生产水平在 1929 年被超过。

c. Since China surpassed the US to become the largest automotive market in the

5. outstrip vt. 超过；胜过；比……跑得快

I think, to date, women have been in the shadow of men, but now two things are
