Professor Emeritus Hartmut E.F. Scharfe is a dialectist from UCLA, expert for Asian languages and cultures, specialized in languages in ancient India. He was the very first person – even before James Doohan and Marc Okrand – to develop the Klingon language. He had also developed the Vulcan dialogues for Star Trek - The Motion Picture.

Creating Klingon

Scharfe had created a first draft of the Klingon language, but Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry did not like that version because it "didn't sound alien enough". Scharfe had used elements from Sanskrit and Germanic, so it sounded somehow recognizable. Later on, James Doohan and producer Jon Povill sat together and developped some random sounds based on Scharfe's work and some nonsense sounds, making the language sounding more harsh.

In a newsgroup message of February 2nd, 1998, Marc Okrand referred to Scharfe, not knowing his name:

As was the case for Klingon, however, I was not the first to make up Vulcan words or phrases. In addition to the dozen or so Vulcan words in various episodes of the original series, there is (relatively speaking) quite a bit of Vulcan in "The Motion Picture" in the scene where Spock is undergoing the Kolinahr ritual. I don't know who made up that dialogue; the people I met while I was working on the later films only referred to the person as "a professor from UCLA." I'd love to know who it was. Does anybody know?
