今天，我们就来说说“grill”(烧烤)。
英语的“grill”来自法语，在法语里有两个同源词：阳性的“un gril”和阴性的“une grille”。
首先，阳性的“gril” 是烧烤用的烤炉 (grilloir)，常可译为英语的“grill”:
Je préfère les steaks cuits sur le gril.
I prefer steak cooked on the grill.
我喜欢烧烤的牛排。
注意: 在下面的句子里，“gril”指的是烤箱里的“上加热管”(heating element in the top of the oven)：
Mettez le plat sous le gril pour le faire gratiner.
Put the dish under the grill to brown it. (US: broiler)
把这道菜放到烤箱里（只开上加热管），烤出焦黄的脆皮来。
另一方面，英语的“grill”也可以指烧烤出的食物，常可译为法语的“grillade”：
Have you ever tasted their charcoal grills?
Avez-vous déjà goûté leurs grillades au charbon de bois?
您品尝过他们的炭火烧烤吗？
“烧烤”的食物一般都有一道道的焦痕吧？那是金属栅格的“烙印”。其实“grill”这个词的本义就是“栅栏，篱笆”(railings, fence), 它来自拉丁语的“cratis”，意为“藤条编织”（wickerwork）。
法语阴性名词“grille”就保留了“栅栏，篱笆”等意义，也可译为英语的“grille”：
La novice (le prisonnier) ne pouvait communiquer avec ses proches qu’au travers d’une grille.
The novice (the prisoner) could only communicate with her relations through a grille.
见习修女（犯人）只能通过格窗与家人说话。
Les fenêtres de la cave étaient munies de solides grilles en fer forgé.
The cellar windows were fitted with strong wrought-iron grilles.
地窖的窗户装了铁栏杆。
但法语的“grille”还有“大门”或“栅栏围墙”的意思，此时，一般不译为英语的“grille”，而是译为“railing, gate”等:
Tout de suite après le tournant, vous verrez à votre droite une grande grille blanche.
Straight after the turning you’ll see a big white (metal) gate on your right.
拐过弯，您就能看见右手边有个高大的白色铁栅栏门。
La grille du parc est surmontée de fers de lance.
The railings around the park are surmounted by spikes.
公园周围的铁栅栏上装有矛尖。
“Grille”的另一个意思是“网格”(grid), 有多种用途啦：
L’espion utilisa une grille pour decoder le message.
The spy used a grid to decode the message.
间谍使用栅格破解密码。
Il a rempli la grille en un rien de temps. C’est un cruciverbiste remarquable !
He completed the crossword (puzzle) very quickly. He’s marvelous at crosswords!
他没用多少时间就填完了字谜格子。他真是个字谜高手！
法语动词“griller”(烧烤，烘烤)，可译为英语的“grill”，也可译为“roast, barbecue”等：
Comme tous les dimanches d'été, Joaquim grillait des saucisses au fond du jardin.
As he did every Sunday in the summer, Joaquim was barbecuing sausages at the bottom of the garden.
依照他的老习惯，夏日的星期天，若阿金又在花园里烧烤起了香肠。
Il est plus sain de (faire) griller la viande que de la frire.
It’s healthier to grill meat than to fry it. (US: broil)
烤肉比用油煎炸更健康。
On sentait une odeur de café grillé (de marrons grillés).
There was a smell of roast(ing) coffee (chestnuts).
有一股烘烤咖啡豆（栗子）的香味儿。

法语的“griller”还有诸多引伸义，这些一般都不译为英语的“grill”, 例如：
Si tu fais ça, tu risques de griller les fusibles (le moteur).
If you do that you might blow the fuses (burn out the motor).
你如果这样操作，会烧断保险（烧坏引擎）的。
Philippe Mathieu a été arrété samedi alors qu’il venait de griller un feu rouge.
Simon Matthews was arrested last Saturday after he had gone through /jumped a red light.
西蒙.马修上周六因闯红灯而被捕了。
Le coureur allemand grilla tous ses adversaires.
The German runner outstripped all his opponents.
德国赛跑运动员战胜了所有的对手。
Je grille (d’impatience) de lui raconter ce qui s’est passé.
I’m itching /dying to tell him what happened.
我迫不及待地想要告诉他发生的事。
英语的“grill”还有“（长时间）讯问” (interroger longuement) 的意思，常译为法语的“cuisiner”：
The police grilled the demonstrator for two hours before they released him.
La police a cuisiné le manifestant pendant deux heures avant de le relâcher.
警察讯问了示威者2小时，然后才放他走。 （烤得他“外焦里嫩”吧？^v^）
顺便说一下, 英语的“grill”还有另一个意思：“hip-pop”(饶舌) 歌手戴的“大金牙”(dental bling)。（^v^）
