月世界属的花很小，可以自花结果，喜阳光，同时也比较耐寒，可以忍受-12度，但是必须保持干燥，水多容易烂。

Epithelantha通常生长在石灰或玄武岩、砂砾或岩石的裂缝里，也与其他仙人掌和多肉植物生长在植被多刺的灌木或树荫下，分布在海拔300米 (Epithelantha ilariae)到2300米(Epithelantha pachyrhiza)的区域。

目前已知的7个可能的物种+ 6个可能的亚种：

月世界（Epithelantha micromeris）和小人帽（Epithelantha bokei）是月世界属最常见的仙人球，虽然两者的样貌极为相似，但是价格却是差了十万八千里。

在园艺养殖中，月世界属的植物在绝大多数爱好者的手中都被养的白白胖胖的，要水有水，要肥有肥，但是在原产地中这种圆润的形态是极其少见的。

月世界属最亮丽的是它的刺，棱很多，形成很多乳突状疣，形成规则的螺旋形，刺白色，20－45根，有的刺座带毛。
