(With Brexit looming, is now the time to buy British?)
The UK should brace itself for months of food shortages from 1 January as strict European rules are enforced and the prospect of long delays at the customs border scare off truck drivers from even attempting to deliver goods across the Channel, experts on both sides of the channel have claimed.
According to the boss of Europe’s largest haulage trade body, the UK is looking at a “nightmare scenario” that will lead to “weeks, if not months” of food shortages after the Brexit transition period comes to an end in just four weeks.
The UK’s leading haulage organisation has also criticised the Government’s preparations, claiming truck companies are unable to plan for the new rules “because we’ve not been told what the rules are”.
Prices of everyday food and drink items are also expected to increase due to the shortages and the additional costs incurred by delivery companies entering the UK.

UK imports more than half its food

EU drivers will not come to UK to avoid costly queues

He added: “We haven’t even had the chance to see the GVMS yet. We should have had this information in August in order to prepare.”
Why UK food deliveries could be hit from January
The UK secures around 45 per cent of its food from abroad, with around 26 per cent of it direct from EU member states and more arriving via the EU from the rest of Europe, northern Africa and the Middle East.
While around four million trucks travelled across the English Channel last year, the European Road Haulers Association believes this figure will more than half next year as customs restrictions are imposed with or without a Brexit deal being stuck before the end of this month.
There are also concerns the UK Government’s new digital customs system will not be fully implemented by the New Year, which will lead to further delays on food.
Simon Sutcliffe, a former HMRC customs investigator and partner a tax and advisory firm Blick Rothenberg, said: “We are aware that there is widespread concern that UK logistics firms are experiencing pushback from EU haulers. Either they are flatly refusing to come to the UK or have massively increased their haulage rates.”
Mr Sutcliffe added the shortage of willing foreign haulers is something that the UK government may have failed to factor into the Brexit issues.
Much of the UK’s supply chain especially fresh produce and ‘just in time’ deliveries of raw materials and components is reliant on foreign based haulers. If they decide that the risks outweigh the benefits, then there is little the government can do.

Speaking to Sky News, TeSco’s chief executive Ken Murphy said the logistics issue was “the biggest challenge” facing the company at the year’s end and he could not rule out the prospect of prices increases to reflect any additional cost increases as a result.
Government puts onus on businesses to prepare
A Government spokeswoman said: “We are making significant preparations for the guaranteed changes at the end of the transition period including investing £705m in jobs, technology and infrastructure at the border and providing £84m in grants to boost the customs intermediaries sector.
“This is alongside implementing border controls in stages so traders have more time to prepare.
Upside for Republic of Ireland
With huge queues expected at UK ports from the Republic of Ireland may be set to benefit from something of a logistics boom.
As EU delivery operators seek to avoid huge queues at UK ports such as Dover in Kent and Felixstowe in Suffolk, an increasing number are looking to Irish ports to deliver goods in order to avoid delays and the additional bureaucracy in a post-Brexit Britain.
According to Marco Digioia, secretary general of the European Road Haulers Association, the hauliers will then travel through the Republic to use the more relaxed customs regime on the border with Northern Ireland to get products into the UK.
Speaking ahead of a visit to Paris, Simon Coveney said there was a “good chance that we can get a deal across the line in the next few days”. However, he warned that all sides needed to be aware of the consequences of failing to strike an agreement that would result in “significant disruption, cost, stress and tension and political blame games between London and Brussels”.

I'm stocking popcorn for January. I expect the Leavers to come up with a lot of creative ideas why "Starving for Brexit" is the bestest thing ever.

And imagine what that Blitz Spirit would have been like if 48% knew that the other 52% had voted for the bombs!

Food shortages during WWII built up gradually over a couple of years. Rationing started with a few non-essential foods, and the system was gradually extended over time as more and more foods became scarce.
We could be seeing shortages of everything in 4 weeks time. We probably will need some form of rationing, but the chances of a system being in place are pretty much zero.

And even if one was put in place you can guarantee Brexiters will be complaining about it on facebook

Meanwhile anyone trying to advise others to stock up in preparation is met with "Stop fearmongering", "The warehouses are packed theres no shortages". Jesus wept

Me too, but I genuinely don't know how to prepare for many weeks or even months. Two weeks is no problem at all. A few months, though? I don't have the room. I just don't want to see my kids go without. :(

There have been a bunch of new ferry routes announced this year that will go direct between Ireland and the mainland. The latest is between Rosslare in the south-east to Dunkirk. https://www.rte.ie/news/2020/1127/1180829-rosslare-wexford-ferry/

Facebook and the gutter press convinced enough people that the closest neighbours are the enemy trying to subjugate the UK. That somehow it was possible for the British Empire to rise from the ashes.

All the people who voted for brexit should be put rations. Better get used to eating offal again.

Maybe I'm over-reacting, but I've swapped out my standalone fridge/freezer for a full-sized freezer and plan on stuffing it full of fruit, veg, and prepped meat-based meals. If the failed supply chains don't cause moderate food shortages, people will panic when they start to see empty shelves again.

I'd need to spend a few hundred grand on a house before I'd have the chance to do that :/
So if the country collapses, I shall be eating the rich :)

I'm sharpening my fork and knife.
But really, I'm far from wealthy myself. I live in rent a one-bed flat and my freezer will be in the hall near the front door. Not very feng shui or aesthetically pleasing.

the more and more people talk about eating the rich the more I get legitimately curious about the edibility of humans.
Ive always told myself that if I could get away with it I'd probably try, guess I'll get my chance soon.

Elections not till May and unlikely to be an Indy vote till 2021-22 and even then it would take a while to work out the arrangements. No matter what how we vote we're stuck with this criminal stupidity for years to come.
If we'd voted Yes in 2014 we'd be independent now (2019 was the target for making it official) and likely an EU member.

I'm not a Brexiteer, I think its the dumbest choice imaginable, but for some reason I feel very sceptical that we will have actual food shortages in the country. Its in no ones interests to deprive us of food imports, and the channel shipping / vehicle lane is literally the busiest in the world right? I don't know, i hope I'm right at least. It just seems quite far fetched, and I get the impression a small minority of remainers almost want to see the country damaged as penance for the choice made...
