By now, it seems like Sky Ferreira's had as many career pivots as she's had birthdays. The electropop of "Lost in My Bedroom", from earlier this year, sounded more massive than it became; its follow-up, "Red Lips", saw Ferreira morph effortlessly into a gloss-grunge singer like co-writer Shirley Manson, but faded as quickly as the titular lipstick. But she's finally got a release date for her new EP, Ghost (October 2, via EMI), and with her new single "Everything Is Embarrassing," Ferreira could well have her breakout moment. Produced by Blood Orange's Dev Hynes and Ariel Rechtshaid (Usher, Cass McCombs), "Everything Is Embarrassing" hinges on a trick so simple it almost shouldn't work. After a verse of snappy, crisply sung dance-pop about long-awaited moments, Ferreira does a quick vocal flourish to launch what should be a buoyant chorus. "Maybe if you let me be your lover," she sings in a sullen alto, but rather than fulfill the proposition, she states, "…but I would not bother," as if halfway through the chorus she gave up, mumbled, and glanced downward. It's a prom theme for people whose dates stumbled out the door during the last song, wistful and final but good enough to keep people dancing anyway.

By now, there's been more than a few remixes of Sky Ferreira's indelible 2012 single "Everything Is Embarrassing"-- notably, both Twin Shadow and Unknown Mortal Orchestra have stepped up to bat in offering their own take on the darkly luminiscent tune. Now, there's another remix courtesy of Manchester's Krystal Klear, and it just might be the best remix yet, as KK opens the song up and turns it into a big, airy house jam. Krystal Klear also released an excellent single last year, We're Wrong, on All City.

Oliver Sabin, the British candy-rave producer known as Unicorn Kid, must have started salivating when he heard the first note of Sky Fereirra's 2012 highlight "Everything Is Embarrassing". The huge, sparkling skeleton of a tune is dream source material for Sabin's blown-out chiptune reworks. Now, in honor of the UK release of Fereirra's Ghost EP (out March 25 on Polydor), the song finally meets its euphoric Unicorn Kid-stamped fate.
