Professor Wong is an Advisor/Research Chair Professor, The Education University of Hong Kong. He served as the Central and NE Asia Coordinator of ‘Regionally based assessment of persistent toxic substances’ (2001-2003) and the Panel of ‘GEF Guidance on emerging chemicals management issues in developing countries and countries with economies in transition’ (2010-2012) (GEF/UNEP). His research areas included ‘Environmental toxicology’, ‘Ecological restoration’, and ‘Resource reuse’. He has published over 800 SCI papers. Professor Wong is ranked 6th (career-long) and listed as the top Chinese scientist in Environmental Science globally according to the World’s Top 2% Scientists (Stanford University, 2020, 2021, 2022). The 2nd edition of Research.com ranked the Best Researchers in Various Disciplines (2023), which only includes publications and citation data for an examined domain.  He is ranked No. 1 in China under Environmental Science.

报告摘要

  A wide range of persistent and toxic chemicals is generated through various consumer products: pesticides, pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PCPPs), detergents, disinfectants, plasticizers, preservatives, microplastics, etc. These chemicals and their metabolites can be found in different environmental media, including wastewater, agricultural and urban runoff, lakes, rivers, groundwater, and drinking water. The conventional wastewater and (drinking) water treatment processes are not constantly removing them efficiently. Some of these potent chemicals may enter the food chain, posing health threats, mainly through consuming contaminated seafood. The primary objectives of this presentation are to review the current status of the sources, fates, and health effects of some significant toxic chemicals, citing some case studies in China. It is also intended to review the exposure pathways of these chemicals and their potential associations with body loadings and associated health impacts. For example, it is known that autism spectrum disorders in children are related to exposure to various environmental pollutants such as heavy metals (Hg, Pb), persistent organic pollutants (DDT, PCBs), and emerging chemicals of concern (bisphenol A, phthalates). These toxic chemicals are widely detected in indoor dust, food items such as fish and meat, and the blood plasma of residents. It seems essential to manage these toxic chemicals more effectively nationally and internationally.
