New push for children to start school atthe age of three as education experts say Australia 'can't afford to wait anylonger' as we fall behind Europe and China

Children should start school at the age ofthree to give them the best start in life and to stop Australia falling behindEurope and China, leading experts claim.

Lobby groups are urging the Federal Government to boost funding for morechildren to have access to school earlier.

More and more private schools and early learning centres are offering'pre-kindy' which exposes children to play-based learning so they are betterprepared for when they start school.

Many programs have lengthy waiting lists and now an initiative led by the EarlyLearning Benefits campaign wants extra funding so more children have access topre-school education.

'We have some children already having access to high quality learning, but manyare missing out … equity is a big issue,' Early Childhood Australia CEOSamantha Page told The Courier Mail.

Latest statistics show only 58.5 per cent of three-year-olds in Australia areenrolled in pre-school programs, compared to 95-100 per cent of children in France,Denmark, Norway, Israel and Spain.

University of the Sunshine Coast senior lecturer Dr Ali Black, saidinternational research showed children introduced to high quality educationearlier were more likely to go to university, gain better jobs and even owntheir own homes.

Children would typically attend two days a week for five-and-a-half hours.

They would have lessons in music, literature, languages, as well as moresocial-based lessons about respecting others and regulating emotions.

Ms Page said Labor made a commitment in October to extend funding to earlyeducation for three-year-olds by 2021.

Childcare and early learning provider C&K is among those leading the waywith pre-kindergarten rooms, like Banyo in Brisbane's north.

But it is not equal. If it is a good thing then why are some childrendiscriminated against and not allowed to go to preschool at 3 in fact they arebanned.

How would this work? Are they going to have childcare workers around asteacher-aides because they're going to need them? Most kids aren't even fullytoilet-trained by 3. And even when they can control the 'functioning', theability to wipe well takes a bit longer so they're still not independent. Sorryfor dragging the conversation into the toilet :-).

Looking at a bigger picture.. Mothers are expected to be back in the workforceasap. They then have to spend their wages to get someone else to look aftertheir kids. Kids then get sent off to school and after school care. Now we arebeing told kids have to be educated from 3. Parents should be the primary caregivers but hardly get the chance. The way society is structured now, it iseffectively the ?state? raising kids. Mothers or fathers that do or candedicate their lives to raise their kids are so undervalued. Fulltime parentinghas been subtly discouraged for years.

Is it going to be free??

You know nothing's free... but it would be cheaper than professional childcare. If it's two days a week, I don't know if they can expect school uniforms.

Aged three my children were itching to go to school. But some children wouldnot be ready.

Our education system had been dumbed down and is overloaded with ideologicalrubbish, teaching children what to think instead of how to think. Unless wesolve that problem starting a year or two earlier won't make any difference.

Parent's need to spend more time interacting with their kids. They learn fromyou. Play with them and read to them. Works better than sending them off toschool sooner.

BlueLioness
uh no. i didnt have childrwn to send them off to ve indoctinated at three. Imall for education, but happy well adjusted kids start at home. What idiotthoight this up.
