Simulation of a hybrid silicon nanoantenna array on a magnetic field. Digital camera sensors use color filters to selectively capture certain color spectrums. Traditional color filters are separate from the photosensitive silicon that makes up the sensor, causing optical cross-talk which limits the minimum possible pixel size. Ho et al. designed a hybrid silicon-aluminum nanoantenna that would allow the filter and sensor to be close enough together to achieve sub-micron pixel dimensions. This design could replace the traditional dye-based filters in ultra-high pixel density camera sensors.

Spectral imaging is an indispensable tool for the chemical and medical fields, but conventional infrared (IR) methods are too slow for evaluation of real-time processes. Using non-degenerate two-photon absorption (NTA), an emerging approach utilizing the photosensitive layer in a regular camera that detects IR light. Knez et al. introduce chirped-pulse NTA (CP-NTA). This spectral imaging technique allows for mid-infrared range (MIR) imaging in high-definition in under a second.

Deformation structure in an individual grain of a multi-principal element alloy. Cao et al. developed a mechanistic strategy for tuning mechanical behaviors of multi-principal element alloys by simultaneously tailoring grain texture and local chemical order. Using simulations at an atomistic level, the study found different characteristics of dislocation patterning and deformation microstructure evolution.

Optomechanical resonators are micro- or nanodevices powered and detected by optical forces. Highly sensitive, these devices detect molecular substances—such as polymers, proteins, and viruses—in vacuum, air, and liquid media. Asano et al. manufactured optomechanical probes consisting of two microbottles. They found that the device is not only capable of high molecular sensitivity in water, but also allows previously unreported free access to the target location. Further development could extend the twin-microbottle resonator’s use in viscous gel-like media and pioneer research towards ultrasensitive biochips and rheometers.
