坚持：insist on

“坚持”是翻译中非常常见的一个词，insist (on) 也是国内译者经常使用的一个译法。我们来看几个翻译实践的例子。以下几个翻译选自几份中国500强企业的可持续发展报告：

• 坚持合规运营：insisted on compliance operation

• 坚持实干精神：the Company will insist on enterprising spirit

• 坚持做优做强主业：insisted on optimizing and strengthening core business

• 坚持依法纳税：insists on paying taxes legally

虽然我们最熟悉的insist的意思确实是“坚持”，但是使用起来一定要谨慎，注意体会这个单词独有的意味。

我们通过英文释义来了解一下insist的三个主要意思：

01 坚称 to say firmly and often that something is true, especially when other people think it may not be true

例：He still insists that he didn’t do it. 他还是坚持说不是他干的。

02 坚持要求、坚持主张（= demand）to say that you must have something; to ask for (something) earnestly or with authority

例：I insist that you stay for dinner. 你一定得留下吃饭。

03 坚持（尤其是麻烦或者令人讨厌的事情） to keep doing something that annoys people; to keep doing something, especially something that is inconvenient or annoying; to keep doing something, even if it annoys other people, or people think it is not good for you 有一层不顾劝阻或反对的意味，有时候会翻译成“偏要”“非要”。

例：He insisted on coming along. 他非要跟着一起来。

因此，我们可以看出，insist (on)在开头几个例子中的使用并不是十分恰当。

坚持：adhere to / stick to

除了insist (on) 之外，“坚持”很多时候也被直接译为 adhere to 或 stick to，表示坚持一种原则、做法、决定等等。

这两个词组在意思上是没问题的，“坚持”在这些语境中有实际意义。不过，需要我们留意的是，有时候“坚持”在句子中更像一个虚词，并不需要被翻译出来。

翻译“坚持” 的4种思路

以十九大报告以及近两年的政府工作报告为例。此类报告中多处出现“坚持”，比如“坚持…的基调”“坚持改革开放”“坚持实干兴邦”等等，官方的英文版也呈现了比较多样的表达方式。

这里我简单把“坚持”的翻译分为四种常见的情况：

1 第一种情况，“坚持”有实际意义，译为adhere to, stick to, uphold, 或 be committed to

• 我们坚持稳中求进工作总基调We have upheld the underlying principle of pursuing progress while ensuring stability

• 坚持党的领导：uphold the leadership of the Party

• 坚持四项基本原则We must uphold the Four Cardinal Principles.

2 第二种情况，“坚持”侧重于一种时间上的延续，可以译为continue to do 或 continuously do sth，一直做、持续做。

• 坚持改革开放：continue to reform and open up

• 坚持解放思想、实事求是、与时俱进、求真务实：It has continued to free our minds, seek truth from facts, move with the times, and apply a realistic and pragmatic approach.

• 坚持实施积极的财政政策 We continued to pursue a proactive fiscal policy

3 第三种情况，“坚持”更像一个虚词。“坚持做一件事”，我们可以去掉“坚持”，通过使用对应的动词和时态直接表达做这件事。这样，在翻译的过程中我们就把动词从“坚持”这个虚词转移到“做”这个动作本身。所以具体用哪一个动词就变得非常灵活，取决于它的宾语是什么。

• 坚持实干兴邦：we must do the good solid work that sees our country thrive.

  思路：去掉“坚持”，使用情态动词must，后面跟真正的动词“实干”，这里翻译为do the good solid work，“兴邦”的翻译是用了一个定语从句。

• 坚持以马克思列宁主义、毛泽东思想、邓小平理论、“三个代表”重要思想、科学发展观为指导 Our Party has been guided by Marxism-Leninism, Mao Zedong Thought, Deng Xiaoping Theory, the Theory of Three Represents, and the Scientific Outlook on Development.

  思路：使用现在完成时（被动语态）。现在完成时表明了某个动作或其影响一直延续至今。去掉“坚持”，动词变为“以…为指导（to be guided by）。

• 坚持群防群控，坚持“四早”：We have carried out a society-wide prevention and control effort and ensured early detection, reporting, quarantine, and treatment of cases.思路：去掉“坚持”，使用现在完成时，分别选择了可以搭配“effort”和“detection, reporting, quarantine, and treatment”的动词carry out 和 ensure。

• 坚持把人民生命安全和身体健康放在第一位：XX puts the health and safety of our people beforeeverything else思路：去掉“坚持”，使用一般现在时，时态本身就表示一种惯常的、没有例外的动作；动词使用了put sth. before sth. else 这样一个结构。

• 坚持实施稳健的货币政策：We maintained a prudent monetary policy思路：去掉“坚持”，使用一般过去式（时态根据具体语境确定），动词使用了可以跟policy搭配的maintain。

4 第四种情况，除了去掉虚词、直接换成对应的实意动词之外，我们根据句子结构，还可以灵活使用介词短语、副词短语以及非谓语动词等结构，如in keeping with, consistent with等。

修改

根据上面的思路，我们试着来修改文章开头的这几个例子：

坚持合规运营 insisted on compliance operation

1）去掉“坚持”，选择一个合适的实意动词，这里使用ensure。2）“合规运营”可以使用compliance的名词或形容词形式。可以改为：we ensure compliance in operations / we ensure compliant operations

坚持实干精神：the Company will insist on enterprising spirit

“实干精神”可去掉“精神”，直接译为“实干”本身所指的内容，比如hard work; to work hard, to do solid work, to deliver solid work, to adopt a pragmatic approach ,to be doers 等。可以改为：the Company will continue to deliver solid work / the Company will continue to adopt a pragmatic approach

坚持做优做强主业：insisted on optimizing and strengthening core business

去掉“坚持”，使用“做”作为动词。具体说法比较灵活。例如，可以改为：continued to strengthen and expand our core businesses  / supported our core businesses in becoming better and stronger

坚持依法纳税：XX insists on paying taxes legally

去掉“坚持”，选择一个实义动词。原翻译所使用的legally并不准确，在这句话中的意思是以一种合法的方式纳税，而原文的意思是按照法律的要求纳税，所以也需要修改。

可以改为：**We pay our taxes as legally required / We pay our taxes as required by law；**再发散一下也可以说成 We fulfill our obligations as a law-abiding taxpayer.
