People who became addicted could quickly suffer from palpitations, chills, anxiety and worry when the effect of the medication faded. The body’s longing for more could, in the worst case, lead to overdoses and deaths.

Ever since then, doctors had been more restrictive in prescribing morphine to anyone other than recently operated patients and those who were already in the final stages of life or had acute painful illnesses.
