We are looking for you:

PhD Positon in the ERC-project T-MIGRANTS (m/f/x)

in Munich

Tasks and responsibilities

The PhD student will work in the ERC project called “T-MIGRANTS: Crossing Borders: The Agency of Nineteenth-Century European Theatre Migrants”, led by Prof. Berenika Szymanski-Düll. The EU-funded project will carry out the first systematic and in-depth analysis of nineteenth-century European theatre migrants. By reclaiming and positioning this group of agents, which has largely been ignored by national theatre historiographies, and by stressing their crucial but hitherto neglected influence on processes of modernity and global entanglement within theatre in and beyond Europe, T-MIGRANTS will open up new ways of evaluating the influence of migration on culture and its institutions. Focusing on migrations between 1850 and 1918 within Europe as well as out of Europe, the project pursues three interrelated key objectives:

1. To systematically collect, analyse and make digitally accessible a new stock of data on nineteenth-century migrants, their theatrical work and their international networks.

2. To contextualise European theatre migrants within the migration processes of the nineteenth century.

3. To investigate the pivotal consequences of theatre migrants on institutional and aesthetical level, including significant impulses towards cross-cultural flows and tensions within the theatre business.

For more information, see:

www.t-migrants.com

The candidate will be expected to pursue research related to the themes of T-MIGRANTS focusing on the objectives of the project (see description above). The PhD student is required to develop a case study on European theatre migrants in the area of South America (e.g. Argentina) concentrating on the impact of migrants on institutions and aesthetics. Therefore, expertise in the theatre history of the focal country is required, as well as excellent language skills, which are the prerequisite of the research. Experience in archival research is desirable.

You have successfully completed a master’s degree in theatre studies, history, or related disciplines. You have a special interest in migration studies, and you will be fluent in English and in the language of the case geography.

Qualification

The candidate is expected to work as part of a team based at LMU Munich and to conduct fieldwork and archival research for the case studies. You are expected to publish the results of your research within the publication program of the project and share the findings of your research with the research community at international academic conferences. You will be expected to be involved in planning and running collaborative project group activities (project meetings, workshops and conferences) as well as in the administrative work associated with the project.

Benefits

The Institute for Theatre Studies in the Faculty of History and the Arts is offering a PhD Position in the fields of theatre, history and migration studies.

Working space, equipment and a travel budget will be provided.

People with disabilities who are equally as qualified as other applicants will receive preferential treatment.

How to apply

Please send the following application materials as a single PDF-document (please specify T-MIGRANTS in your email subject line) to:

Berenika.Szymanski@lmu.de

-a motivation letter, including a statement explaining your motivation for the relevant vacancy,

-your academic CV with Bachelor and Master qualification (including grades or marks),

-a writing sample (excerpt from your Master's thesis, paper, article, etc.),

-a reference letter (e.g. from your thesis supervisor)

-name and contact details of at least one further referee

Applications received by 30 September 2022 will receive full consideration. Review of the applications will continue until suitable candidates are found. Shortlisted candidates will be invited for interviews.

英国帝国理工学院招收全奖博士生

职位信息

英国伦敦帝国理工学院(Imperial College London)化学工程系现有博士职位可申请,提供全额奖学金,预计2022年10月入学。

About the project

An Industrial PhD studentship in collaboration with Shell on the development of high-octane fuels from sustainable resources is available under the supervision of Prof. George Britovsek (Department of Chemistry) & Prof. Klaus Hellgardt (Department of Chemical Engineering) at Imperial College London.

Aims of the project

The aim of the project is to identify novel routes to manufacture high-octane fuel streams, ideally RON >102. The feedstocks for the manufacture should be derivable from renewable sources, e.g. plants, hydrogen from renewable electricity, captured CO2.  The project will involve catalyst and process development towards a catalytic continuous flow process for the conversion of a sustainable carbon-based feedstock to a high-octane fuel stream.

Eligibility

Applications are invited from candidates who have, or expect to have, at least an Upper Second Class degree (preferably a First Class degree) or an equivalent qualification, either in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering. Candidates with a chemistry degree are expected to have a basic understanding of reaction engineering.  Candidates with a chemical engineering degree are expected to have a basic understanding of catalysis and reaction mechanisms.

Funding notes

The studentship will cover tuition fees (UK home rate) and a stipend (plus London allowance) for 3.5 years and it is anticipated that the successful candidate will start in October 2022.

Applications from candidates meeting the eligibility requirements are welcome – please refer to theCollege websitefor eligibility requirements.
