1 靠......挣钱养家怎么说？

 

bread and butter： a person or company’s main source of income

 (某人或者公司的)主要收入来源

Her bread and butter is teaching English.

跟bread相关的另外一个习语也很常见，

breadwinner 养家糊口的人

I’ve always paid the bills and been the breadwinner.

 

 

2  pickle  酸菜谁不爱呢？

男主James打算从Glasgow格拉斯哥到Yorkshire约克郡去一家兽医院当assistant, 这时妈妈送他去火车站，给了他cheese and pickle，可以感受到妈妈对孩子暖暖的爱意。

 

pickle指的是泡菜，酸菜。

据说cheese and pickle奶酪酸菜三明治是非常典型的英式三明治，在英国老少皆宜，以后有机会去英国好想尝一尝。

 

 

3 “浑身湿透了”用英语怎么说？

 

 

James第一次来到Farnon家里，淋雨了，这是管家看到他，说到：“you are drenched”

wet可能只是淋雨打湿了一点，而 drench指的是completely wet.

We were caught in the storm and got drenched to the skin. 淋得浑身湿透got drenched to the skin, 挺形象的，强调连skin了打湿了。

 

 

4 reference 除了提到 涉及之外，还表示“推荐信”的意思，往往在找工作面试时会用到。

5 flannel 这个词表示“敷衍,兜圈子的话，场面话”
